Who...who...wants a free pattern????

I don't have a wee little one but I find the little cocoons popping up everywhere are simply adorable!!!!!! They are so sweet and incredibly easy to make! Seriously it is so easy....and they work up really quick if you use super chunky yarn and a large hook! So I decided to whip up this little number and decided to share the pattern just incase anyone wants to make one.

Pattern Abbreviations
ch~chain
sc~single crochet
hdc~half double crochet
dc~double crochet
sl st~slip stitch
sk st~skip stitch
invdec~invisible decrease
fo~fasten off

Baby Owl Cocoon and Hat Set
I used really chunky yarn a big value ball from Wal*Mart and a 6mm crochet hook for this pattern.
DC=double crochet
SL ST=slip stitch
CH=chain
Reverse sc (also known as the crab stitch).
*Crochet Spot has a wonderful tutorial for the revserse single crochet....click here!*
Cocoon
  • 10dc in ring, sl st closed (sl st close at the end of every round thru the entire pattern).
  • Ch2, dc in same st (do this at the beginning of every round, this will give your cocoon a nice clean seam) then 2dc in each st around.
(Seam)
  • Dc in each st around (Do this round twice).
  • Dc, dc, dc, 2dc in next st. (for entire round)
  • Dc, dc, 2dc in next st. (for entire round)
  • Dc in each st (Do this round 4 times).
  • Do 10dc around then do 2dc in next st. (for entire round)
  • Dc around (Do this round 23  times).
  • Reverse sc around (also known as the crab st).
Your work should measure about 12” wide and 17” long….and since I used chunky yarn it had some give and was a bit stretchy and oh so soft, perfect for swaddling your new bundle of joy!
Owl Hat
  • 10 dc in ring, sl st closed.
  • *Ch 2, 1 dc in same st (do this at the beginning of each round)*, 2dc in each st around.
  • *Dc, 2dc in next st*(for entire round)
  • *Dc, dc, 2dc in next st* (for entire round)
  • Dc in each st(do this round 10 times)
  • Reverse sc(also known as the crab st), fo and weave in ends.
Eyes (Make 2)
  • With black yarn do 7sc in ring
  • 2 sc in each st around
  • Switch to blue, do 2sc in each st around
  • Switch to white, sc, 2sc in next st. (for entire round)
  • Sc around, fo and leave a long tail
Beak
  • Ch 7
  • Sc in second ch from hook and the remaining ch's
  • Ch 1 turn, sc across
  • Ch 1, turn, invdec,sc, sc, invdec
  • Ch 1, turn, sc across
  • Ch 1, turn, invdec, invdec, fo leave a long tail
Ears (Make 2)
  • 6sc in ring
  • 2sc in each st
  • sc around (do this round 3 times), fo leave a long tail
Now you take your eyes, ears, and beak and sew them on the hat, weave in your ends and that's it! And no I don’t have a wee one on the way….my nest is nearly empty my one and only is a few short years from leaving home. Yikes....she graduates next  year, man that makes me feel old typing that! I made this little set for an upcoming craft fair the end of May! This time I will make sure to take pictures! The last sale was my first craft fair and I was SWAMPED! Now I will be more prepared :) I hope you like the pattern! Please email me if you have any questions.

  6. Hi there, I'm a beginner at crocheting. I am wondering, how many stitches are crocheted in the beginning, to make the first ring? this pattern is so adorable!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hello Anonymous,
You do 10 double crochets in a magic ring to start this cocoon pattern.....

Or if you do not know how to do a magic ring you can do chain 2, then do 10 double crochets in the second chain from your hook.

I was thinking of making up some tutorials for crocheting....and will add this to my list....might take me a few days though to get them done. I hope this can help you for now :)

  9. I used chunky yarn and this cocoon measures 12 inches wide/around....and 17 inches long. I made a pumkin one the same size...you can see it with a real model in it .....in this post http://amidorablecrochet.blogspot.com/2011/03/shushjust-shush-your-mouth.html I hope this helps :)

  10. Thanks so much for sharing this pattern. My firstborn neice is having her first baby. She asked me if I could make her a Cocoon to bring the little one home from the hospital. They do not want to know the sex of the baby before he/she is born. This pattern is perfect as for the nursery is being done in baby owls and the bedding is adorable. Now the little one can come home in September in perfect style.....Thanks Again...Sally

  11. Just want to say that it's a wonderful pattern. I' pregnant, and I'm doing this for my little baby :) I'm having some trouble with the cocoon; I'm a beginner at the crocheting. I'm at the 8th step of the cocoon (3 on 23 round), and it's only 6 inches wide. What did I do wrong? Another question; when you write ''Dc, dc, dc, 2dc in next st. (for entire round)'' in the pattern, does it mean that I have to double crochet 3 times, and after that double crochet 2 in the same stitch, and then, repeat until the end of the round?
    Thank you,
    Anika

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hello Peter and Anika!
Okay so your finished cocoon should measure about 12 inches wide and about 17 inches long. And if you use chunky yarn it should have some give and be a bit stretchy. I have only made this pattern with chunky yarn....I think it would be to small if you used a different weight.

So for the 8th step (3 on 23 round)~ this means you will double crochet around the entire round.....and do this 23 times. ( so 23 rounds of double crocheting) this will also add a bit of width to the cocoon.

And yes for dc, dc, dc, 2dc in next st (for the entire round). You will follow this sequence for the entire round.

I hope this helps.....if not feel free to send me an email....there is a contact me tab in the menu below my header and I would be more than happy to help if you get stuck again :)

    This is so adorable.

How would I increase the size to fit a teen/adult?

How much would I need to increase it by?

    Thanks!!

  15. Hello, thanks for the sweet comment.

I have made a couple adult owl hats in the past but they had the ear flaps with the braids....at the moment I only have the newborn cocoon pattern written up. When I get time to make more hats I will add an adult version to my to do list again and write down the pattern as I go :)

  16. Hi, I love your pattern and have only begun crocheting recently.I live in Australia and I'm trying to determine whether you use US or UK terminology because I keep having to restart the cocoon. I figured as the sc (single crochet stitch) was mentioned it would mean I should use US but it doesn't look right. Please help!:(

    ReplyDelete
  17. This pattern is darling! Thank you so much for sharing it! I do have a quick question for you about it: Are you using British or English crochet terms? I note that the pattern is worked mostly in dc, but when looking at the photos of the project, the stitch pattern looks more like what I know as hdc. Just want to clear that up before I start hooking. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hello Crochet Dumbie and Heather,
I am using US crochet terms.....here is a link of a video that shows how to double crochet....please let me know if you need anymore help.

  19. thank you for this pattern. I've been looking for an easy cocoon for a work mate. when you say "chunky" wool, what do you mean? I'm in Australia, and we use "ply" ... an 8 ply wool is an "average" thickness, used for jumpers, blankets etc.
    thanks again for your pattern

  22. I love your work!!!

I'm making a cocoon for my baby, and my seam is a disaster... could you explain to me how did you accomplish your nice, clean one? Thanks!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hello Marichu,
To get a nice clean seam you sl st closed to the first ch of the previous round at the end of every round.

Then ch2, and then dc in the same st. At first it might look a bit weird....but after a few rounds you will see the seam. It gives your work a nice clean look :) I hope this helps.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love this, it is so cute. The round that says "Do 10 dc the 2dc in next stitch for entire ound. I end up with 3 stitchs at the end is this correct? Do you have a total stitch count for the rounds?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Joanne, thanks for the sweet comment :)

Okay I do not have a total stitch count...but for that round you will ....

Do 10 double crochets, then do 2 double crochets in the next stitch and follow this sequence for the entire round.

The cocoon at this point should be quite wide...so you should have alot more than 3 sitiches at the end of this round. I hope this helps :)

  26. I was so happy when I saw this. I'm about to have my second little one and we decided the theme would be owls so this cocoon fits in perfect with our arrangements. Thank you so much :)

  27. 12 inches wide as in from one side to the other or all the way around? If I am making this for a 3 month old how would I make it wider/longer? I really want to adapt this pattern to make my son's Halloween costume!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Paula, I layed the cocoon flat and fron one side to the other width wise is was 12 inches. I have only made these cocoons for newborns...... I would try to add another round of doing 2dc in each stitch around after the second round in this pattern. Sorry I have never made one for a 3 month old. But you will need to increase early in the pattern so I would try that and see if it works :)

  32. Sigh....what am I doing wrong? I'm not a new crocheter....but I made the cocoon 6 times and ripped it out as many or more. I used a J hook (6mm) and it was weirdly tiny, so I tried a 10mm (it was all I had at the time) and it was enourmous. Then I got a K (6.5) and made it....it measures 12 wide and 17 long but is only 23 rows total. Do I keep going? Then I tried the hat...this time back to a J hook (6mm). It seems big too. How long and wide is it supposed to be? I'm using a chunky yarn. I don't crochet tight but not too loose either. I'm just stumped. Help?

Ps. I really do love the pattern very much! It is TOTALLY CUTE!! A gauge or row stitch count could be helpful tho :-)

  33. I have to back up Sew and so much more said. Mine isn't coming out either, and like her, this isn't my first rodeo. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have ripped this thing out at least 8 times, and it always ends up looking like a doll hat. I have gone back over the pattern with a fine tooth comb and it still looks wrong. I was going to make this for a baby shower this sunday and I am not looking like I am going to make it at all :(

  34. Hello "Sew and So Much More" and "Nicole...I am so sorry you are having troubles with the pattern. I am not sure why it is not working out...I did have one reader that was using just worsted weight and once she swithced to chunky yarn and tried it again then it came out the right size. Sorry I am not sure why it is not working out. I used a chunky value ball of yarn and a size 6 metal hook. I have used the pattern a few times and have had other people say it was easy to follow....I will go find the link to the yarn I use so you can see the weight.

    1. Hi Courtney,
I did have some curling for a few rounds when making the cocoon. But there should be no curling if you are working on the hat :)

      Delete
  37. Hi! What a a wonderful project!!!! But i'm having problems with the seam as well. Instead of going straight up the side, it seems to be curving around. I assume this means i'm missing or adding a stictch somehow. I'm wondering if it's necessary to to make the seam at all. Once you hit the 23 DC, couldn't you just continue to crochet around? I was also wondering why at the seam you only ch 2 at the beg? I've always been taught that you chain 3 when working with a general pattern that uses DC's. But there must be a reason why you only chain 2...right?

And I'm not trying to be critical. The pattern is fairly easy, but it would really help if you included stitch counts for every round. That way i would be able to trouble shoot my seam problem on my own. Any help is appreciated! Thanks again for making this pattern available!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello,
No it is not necessary to do the seam, just personally I really like the way it looks. You could just keep dc around.

And I just chained 2 at the seam becuase I liked the way it looked. And I found I really didn't need to chain 3. I hope this helps.

And you are not being critical :) I am sorry I just never really write down or go by the stitch count.

I have had my seam go wonky before and the reason why was because after chaining I jumped to the next stitch instead of sc in the same stitch. I hope that helps :)

    1. Hello,

Are you using chunky yarn, this pattern is made using chunky yarn. Not sure why your cocoon is not working up. For measurements it should be 12” wide and 17” long.

In the pattern where it says "Dc, dc, dc, 2dc in next st. (for entire round)" for the "2dc in next st" portion are you doing the two double crochets in that stitch :)

I am up to dc 23 rounds...but the one before that 10dc then 2 dc. confused me..it does not seen to be decreasing. i can't see how this will get to 17" high...it looks like it is just getting wider. 55. Just wanted to give a heads up to all the people out there that think baby cocoon sets are just for babies.
I did this set in a worsted weight yarn which made it come out a little bit smaller, but not much. I then stitched the back bottom of the hat to the top of the cocoon. I added a couple of buttons and buttons loops evenly spaced to close this up nice.
Does anyone know what this gives you?
How about a pajama bag for kids. Sewn pj bags were a big thing when I was a young girl and I made many of them for friends little brothers and sisters. So why don't we bring this idea back as it helps kids learn to keep their rooms neat.
